Mixing dolls and outfits

How many of you put other dolls clothing on different dolls. I love Samantha's clothing but I like Josephina's look the best. I actually like Molly's character the best. I noticed on ubarose's website, her dolls all wore different clothing.

My girls are always putting different clothes on the dolls. Josefina here loves to wear Sam's blue winter dress. & Kailey is always trying on Addy's clothes. While Kaya & Felicity love to be colonial friends. I think the girls have fun dressing the dolls in like clothing to make them 'friends', alas, since my girls are so young they've only been able to sit thru the short story books (which I was lucky enough to find at the goodwill for $.69/each), but not the full books, so the dolls have yet to bond to the intended character. And for someone on a limited budget having more clothes & a good imagination is easier than having every doll. [img]biggrin.gif[/img]

I see absolutely nothing wrong in the girls sharing eachothers clothes, like previously said I'd rather have few dolls and a lot of clothes than the many dolls and nothing to put them in.
Ada (AGOT 21) loves Samantha's dresses, and she looks lovely in them.

I tend to stick to one era at at time also, with my Josefina being friends with Kit and Laura (Samantha). So right now, all three are wearing Samantha's outfits, which look great together. Kit is wearing Samantha's Lawn Party Outfit, Laura, who looks a lot like Samantha, is wearing Samantha's Talent Show Outfit, and Josefina is wearing Samantha's Winter Party Dress.
All three dolls standing together look wonderful dressed in Victorian cream, pink and pale blue.

I have lists of outfit collections I would like to get to keep the 3 dolls dressed alike. For Kit to wear her birthday dress, Josefina and Laura will be wearing similar attire from the same era, probably dresses I make from photos in Kit's books.

My American Girl dolls only wear clothes from their eras. To see Felicity, for example, in present day clothes just doesn't look "right" to me. This is my personal opinion only, because I do not hold it against anyone who mixes the clothing around. [img]biggrin.gif[/img] I grew up with American Girl *before* there were American Girl Today dolls. There was only Samantha, Molly, and Kirsten. I thought of the face mold as an old-fashioned doll. So when the AGTs came out it was a little jarring to see these historical dolls wearing 1990s clothing! [img]wink.gif[/img] That might be one reason I'm less likely to swap clothes. Now you can see versions of the dolls in the catalog wearing present-day clothes. (Because, even though it seems odd, the AGTs are really no different and Addy and Molly, for example, are in the catalog as 2004 girls, too.) I think this might be one reason customers might find it okay to dress the dolls in present-day clothes. If I dressed Addy in the AGT clothes, she would look like an AGT. But back before the AGTs were around, you maybe wouldn't be as likely to mix clothing around. Just a thought!

We mix and match everything. We have much more AGoT clothes. Those get mixed and matched a whole lot. I have Kit dressed in pieces from 3 different outfits rigth now and she is adorable.

The historical stuff doesn't get moved around a whole lot. Except for the shoes. Those do. Like Kit, her shoes are pretty timeless.....actually Most of the shoes are pretty timeless and the historicals shoes stay on better. Kayas Jingle dress gets worn by Kirsten because Marina is a blond girl who also does Native dance. We feel most of Kayas clothes can therefore be worn by Kisrten.

Weird really. Marina puts on the clothes she likes. I am just happy to see her do it.

My girls wear all their historcial correct clothing, well.. until that Blackout happended.. [img]wink.gif[/img]

But I cannot see Samantha in a AGOT outfit or another Historical outfit!
BUT Samantha2 who is a 1993 pre mattel, looks GREAT in Addy's stripe dress! And I love dressing Kailey and Nora in AGOT outfits only! Right now Kailey has gone GREEK, and Nora is wearing that cute short Easter blue dress.
Then again, I have had Kit wearing the blue floral outfit set, and it looks GREAT on her.

We have been sticklers for keeping the clothes with the correct doll, but recently we've somewhat broken out of the mold. We don't have a Molly yet, but we have some of her clothes, so we let our Kirsten or Samantha wear them. It still feels a little funny doing that, though. I guess we do like keeping to the correct historical outfits with each doll. We have a few of the AGOT outfits as well that we have had Josefina wear and she looks lovely in them.

I usually try to stay in the historical era also.
Until my photo album, I don't think Addy had worn a dress other than her own. I can tell you this--- Nellie is going to get a few of Sam's dresses and Kit's overalls and cap too, which were appropriate for the turn of the century as well. (For those days when she feels like masquerading as a boy.) [img]wink.gif[/img]
